The Pine River Valley Nordic Ski Club, with the help of San Juan Sledders,
has groomed 12 kilometers of classic- and skate-ski trails on the east side
of Vallecito Reservoir. The family-oriented cross-country ski trail system
is accessed by driving across the dam at the south end of Vallecito
Reservoir on County Road 501. The trail system begins at the end of the
snowplowed portion of Forest Road 602 at the entrance to Old Timers
Campground. The road across the dam is narrow, Forest Road 602 is
snowpacked, and parking is limited and roadside. High-clearance vehicles
are recommended.
Trails are maintained by volunteers, with donations from users providing
for gasoline and equipment maintenance. Donations can be mailed to Pine
River Valley Nordic Ski Club, 111 Vallecito Drive, Vallecito Lake, CO
81122. The San Juan National Forest coordinates the volunteer effort and
provides trailhead information, along with a portable toilet.
For more information, contact Rick Callies, Pine River Valley Nordic Ski
Club, 884-7302.

Marilyn McCord
at her Vallecito home on the mountain.

Marilyn knows what it takes to keep snow cleared, enough to get out of the house.

She is active in community affairs, and is a leader in the efforts to acquire grants
and other support to establish a trail and facilities around Vallecito Lake.

“People in a small town don’t read the newspaper the next morning to
                                                                        find  out what happened.
They just read the newspaper to find out who got caught at it!”
